The folks we mention here didn’t all design office furniture, but their aesthetics have impacted the look and feel of both offices and office design for decades. Let’s take a closer look at some of the pioneers in the furniture industry and why their craft is still relevant today.

  1. Charles and Ray Eames

Charles and Ray EamesCharles and Ray Eames are two of the most influential furniture designers of the 20th century. They have contributed to the development of the modernist movement, which emphasized clean lines, simple forms, and functional design. The couple’s most famous work is the Eames Lounge Chair, which was first introduced in 1956. The chair is still in production today and is a favorite of design enthusiasts all over the world.

The Eameses also designed a wide range of other furniture, including tables, chairs, and storage units. Their designs were often made of new materials like fiberglass and plastic, which allowed for greater flexibility and creativity in appearance.

Characterized by its simplicity and elegance, Gray’s most famous office furniture piece is the E-1027 Side Table, which was first introduced in 1927. The uniquely designed table features adjustable components that can be moved to create different configurations. This was a game changer for offices, because the table’s ability to reconfigure allows each employee more flexibility in terms of how the table is used.

David KelleyDavid Kelley is an American designer who has made many advancements in the field of office furniture design. He is the founder of the design firm IDEO and has worked with many of the world’s leading companies, including Apple and Coca-Cola. Kelley’s designs are known for their playful and innovative style, and he is credited with creating many iconic office staples, including the Steelcase Leap Chair.
