Tips For Creating An Ergonomic Workspace
If you work at a desk for a living, chances are that you accept a certain level of discomfort as normal – after all, you’re staying stationary over a computer keyboard for hours at a time, right? Wrong! With a few adjustments and the right commercial office furniture, you can make your workspace a much more comfortable and healthier place to be.
Is an ergonomic workspace worth it?
Just follow these easy tips:
- Invest in adjustable chairs: Each of us have different length legs and torsos, so it makes sense that a non-adjustable chair just isn’t going to work for everyone. The right way to use an adjustable chair is to choose the setting that allows you to place your feet flat on the ground with your thighs at a 90-degree angle, parallel to the floor. Your neck and torso should be vertical and in-line with your hips.
- Try out a standing office desk: These don’t work for everyone, but they are great if you take a liking to them! The right way to set up one of these desks is so that your legs, torso and head are approximately in-line and vertical. You should not have to bend your head to look at your screen, and your arms should rest easily at 90-degree angles on the desk.
- Screen position: Your computer monitor should be placed at eye level, so you don’t have to bend your neck up or down, or slouch down to look at it comfortably. One quick and easy fix is to raise it up on some sturdy books.
- Keyboard and mouse: Your keyboard and mouse should be positioned so that you can reach them easily from a relaxed, neutral body position as described in the chair and desk tips.
- Good lighting: Bad lighting makes you lean forward and squint, while a too-bright monitor can strain your eyes. If your overhead lights are not enough, or you find yourself suffering with headaches, invest in a desk light that uses a bright, warm bulb.
